The Kinds of Face Cream

The Kinds of Face Cream

by Jane Villardo

Different kinds of face cream have different components and can do different things for you. Deciding which ones to use can be a complicated process because there is such a wide variety to choose from, including day creams and night creams, cleansing creams and moisturizing creams, and anti-aging creams and sun-block creams. This is a partial guide to certain types.

Cold cream was invented by Galen. He is a Greek physician who lived in 129 to 200 AD. He emulsified a mixture of oils, beeswax, water, and fragrances to make his concoction. Probably the oldest known face cream, cold cream is now used for cleansing and moisturizing the skin. It derives its name from the feeling of coolness that it leaves on the skin.

For normal to dry skin, a cleansing face cream is best for removing make up, dirt, and surface residue because it cleans without drying the skin. An appropriate amount of cleansing cream is applied and gently massaged onto the skin and then either wiped or washed off, depending on the instructions of the maker. Some cleansing creams contain granules that help remove debris and stimulate circulation.

A moisturizing face cream must be used everyday to replenish the natural lipids of the skin and maintain a youthful glow. Soft, smooth skin is the result of regular application of moisturizers. There are usually 2 kinds of moisturizing cream, one which is appropriate for night use and another which is used during the day. Moisturizing creams are beneficial for the dry to normal skin types.

The skin also needs protection from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. This is because ultraviolet rays damage the skin, causing premature wrinkles, age spots, sun burn, and skin cancer. A face cream that contains sun block or sun screen will help protect facial skin and should be applied whenever exposure to the sun is likely. This will prevent the skin from being damaged.

Face creams that contain AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) and retinol (a form of vitamin A) are called anti-aging creams. This type of face cream stimulates the renewal of skin cells and reduces the signs of aging such as dark spots and wrinkles. While anti-aging creams offer a lot of benefits, these also carry adverse effects which include skin irritation, burning and blistering, and discoloration and should be used with care.

A medical practitioner should be consulted before using any anti-aging cream. On the other hand, other types of face creams are usually harmless to most individuals. Just to be sure, a face cream should be tested before use. You can test by applying a small amount to an area of your skin which is generally not noticeable. Leave the cream on for 24 to 48 hours and see if it has adverse effects.

The purpose in using a face cream is to improve the condition and appearance of the skin. If the results are less than optimal, alternative products should be looked into. It may take a bit of time but the right kind of face cream for a particular individual can be found.
