Petrolatum In Anti Wrinkle Creams May Be Damaging To Your Health
There are hundreds or perhaps even thousands of anti ageing products like anti aging moisturizers and anti wrinkle creams on the market and sadly most of them don’t work very well. However there is a more serious risk, lots of them contain chemical ingredients that could damage your health. A good example is a chemical ingredient called petrolatum.
You might know petrolatum as Vaseline. In fact Vasaeline is pure petrolatum. Other names for it are white petrolatum, petroleum jelly, petroleum wax or white petroleum or other names. Petrolatum comes from the distillation of crude oil and is what is known as a petrochemical byproduct.
The Cosmetic Safety Database is an organisation tasked with examining many of the ingredients found in our cosmetics, skin care and anti aging products and it describes petrolatum has being linked to cancer as well as being linked to non reproductive toxicity and product contamination. It is the product contamination that is extremely worrying. In various manufacturing processes petrolatum can be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs. These are seriously worrying, highly toxic and linked to cancer.
There’s many companies making anti aging products such as anti wrinkle creams which do not test for the presence of PAHs in their products and do not list them on the label.
So why is petrolatum used in so many skin care products and anti aging products such as anti wrinkle creams and anti aging moisturizers? There is one simple answer. It’s because petrolatum is incredibly cheap. The cheaper the ingredients you can find for the products the more profit you make. The FDA is not required to test for petrolatum or any other dangerous ingredients such as PAHs and so, because they can, the anti aging companies use them in their products.
There are some highly effective natural ingredients which are known to promote better skin health and which are extremely safe to use but these are rarely used in most mainstream anti aging products because they are much more expensive and therefore reduce profit margins.
However these ingredients are used in the best anti aging and anti wrinkle creams and moisturizers and the result is extremely effective and very safe products which work very well. However this also means that the cost of the products is much higher than the cost of mainstream anti aging products and therefore, if the companies that make them advertised them, they would sell at a price that would make them uncompetitive in the marketplace.
The companies that make them don’t advertise their products because they can’t afford to and so they rely on the slow growth of a dedicated group of loyal customers who use the products for life and the business grows in this way. But because they don’t advertise I can be sure you’ve never heard of these companies even though they make top shelf anti aging products.
So the good news is that there are excellent anti aging products such as anti wrinkle creams and if you look on the label you won’t see petrolatum or any other chemical or petrochemical ingredients listed there. They are high quality products with much more expensive high quality ingredients and they work well.
