Acne Myths
When you have acne, it is sometimes difficult to determine which treatments might work and which ones are just old wives tales. There are a number of published myths that someone needs to dispel.
Myth No. 1 - Diet Is The Cause Of Acne
Wrong — you’ve probably heard that sodas, chocolate and fatty foods cause acne. This is not true. Research has proven that the single thing in your diet that can aggravate your skin problems is iodized salt. Diet is totally unrelated to acne problems. Continue to eat the foods you love to eat. If you think that something you are eating is creating your acne, what you are likely seeing is a food allergy. Talk to your health care provider at once.
Myth No. 2 - Only Teenagers Get Acne
This is also false. Twenty percent of all infants have an episode of acne. Five percent of all ladies over forty still deal with acne problems and will until menopause. At the same age, 1% of men continue to have some acne problem.
Myth No. 3 - Poor Hygiene Is The Cause Of Acne
Many of you may have heard that poor hygiene is the cause of acne. Actually, it doesn’t. Usually those with acne actually over wash their faces in the attempt to rid themselves of the problem. This actually isn’t good as it can irritate the acne.
Acne is the result of an overproduction of body oils that clog the pores and no amount of washing or scrubbing can correct that. At the same time acne sufferers think that lying in the sun will benefit this skin condition by drying out these excess oils. Unfortunately, the suns rays do nothing for your skin accept cause wrinkles. This can also potentially lead to skin cancer.
If you are using antibiotic medicine to clear up your acne, once the acne is gone, do not stop taking the medication. Many people believe that is okay to quite when they cannot see any reason to take it once the blemishes have cleared. This is not right. You should never stop taking any kind of medicine without your doctor’s agreement. Quitting the medication before its time could easily allow it to come right back.
Miscellaneous Myths
Other strange myths that some people still believe include:
* Sex causes acne — wrong. * Stress causes acne — this also is incorrect but stress has been known to make acne worse. * There is a cure for acne — sorry but that one is not correct either.
